Best iPhone Duo apps: 12 useful apps for everyday life

The iPhone Duo, Apple's first foldable, went on sale on 23 October: a 5.4-inch outer display for using it closed like a normal phone, and a 7.6-inch inner display that, when open, gets close to a small tablet. Every iPhone app runs on it, but not every app uses that space: apps that have not been updated open in an iPhone-sized window with black bars on the sides. This is our pick of useful everyday apps, with what each one does when you open the Duo and, above all, whether it is already adapted or not yet.

THE ESSENTIALS

Every iPhone app opens on the iPhone Duo, but only updated ones fill the 7.6-inch inner display. For planning, Things, Fantastical, Bear and Craft are already adapted; for your spending, Neto; for messaging and questions, WhatsApp and ChatGPT. Duolingo, Google Maps and Spotify do not use the whole screen yet, and Notion is not on Apple's list.

The 12 apps at a glance

Status checked on 30 October 2026 against the list of adapted apps Apple published on 22 October and against FitsDuo, a site that tracks, version by version, whether each app fills the inner display.

For planning your day

Things. The task app that fits the open Duo best: it shows your lists in a sidebar next to your tasks, so your projects stay in view while you work on one. Apple includes it among the apps already adapted for the foldable.

Fantastical. Calendar and tasks in a single view. On the open Duo, Apple highlights that it shows calendars, tasks and menus together, which on a normal phone means switching screens.

Bear and Craft. Two note apps with different styles: Bear is for writing quickly and organising with tags, Craft for building documents with blocks, tasks and links between pages. Both are on Apple's list and use the inner display to show more at once.

What about Notion? It is what most people use to get organised, and it runs on the Duo like any iPhone app. But as of 30 October it is not on Apple's list of adapted apps, so do not expect a version designed for the foldable just yet. If it is your everyday tool, stick with it; if you are starting from scratch and want to use the screen, Craft is the closest alternative that is already adapted.

03

For your spending: Neto

Neto is our app, so take this with that in mind. It is a personal finance app for iPhone and Android that brings your spending, savings and investments together into one figure, your net worth, without connecting your bank: you log each expense yourself in a couple of taps, and nobody else holds your banking passwords.

With the iPhone Duo open in landscape, Neto changes shape: the tab bar becomes a rail along the side and the home screen splits into two columns. One shows your transactions and the other today's spending, your accounts and where your money goes by category, all at once. Closed, on the outer display, it works like on any iPhone, for logging an expense in seconds. It is free to start, with spending, budgets, savings goals and 62 currencies. Everything is on the Neto for iPhone page.

04

For messaging, questions and work

WhatsApp. According to FitsDuo, the 26 October version is already built for the iPhone Duo and fills the inner display. With the Duo open, your conversations take the whole inner screen instead of an iPhone window.

ChatGPT. FitsDuo also lists it as adapted since late October. Long answers, tables and code are easier to read on the big screen than on a normal phone, where they mean a lot of scrolling.

Slack. Apple names it among the apps already taking advantage of the foldable: on the inner display it shows your whole workspace, making it easier to follow channels.

Word and Outlook, on the way. Microsoft is preparing Duo versions with formatting tools next to the document and the inbox next to an open email. Apple says they will arrive "in the coming weeks"; until then they open as on any iPhone.

05

For learning languages: Duolingo, with a caveat

Duolingo is still the most consistent way to practise a language for five minutes a day, and it works fine on the iPhone Duo. But according to FitsDuo, the 28 October version does not yet use any of Apple's foldable tools: open, it shows in an iPhone-sized window with black bars. For short lessons it hardly matters, because you can use it closed, on the outer display, which is a normal phone screen.

06

For fun and travel

Netflix. One of the first adapted apps: with the Duo closed you watch clips on the outer display and, when you open it, you keep watching the show on the inner one. Half-folded, the picture sits above the fold and the controls below.

Flighty. If you travel, it is the best app for following a flight: delays, gates and changes in real time. On the Duo it has its own mode for tracking a flight with the phone propped up half open.

What does not fill the screen yet. According to FitsDuo, Google Maps and Spotify only use part of it: they look bigger than on an iPhone, but with a black border. They work fine; they are simply not built yet with the system version that gives them the full width.

07

How to tell if an app is adapted

Just open it with the Duo unfolded: if you see black bars on the sides, it is not adapted yet. Apps are being updated every week, so what opens in an iPhone window today may fill the screen in a few days. Keeping automatic updates on in the App Store is the easiest way to get new versions without thinking about it.

If you are still deciding whether to buy one, you have the numbers to do it without wrecking your month in how to save for the iPhone 18, which also covers the Duo.

Frequently asked questions

Do all iPhone apps work on the iPhone Duo?

Yes. Every iPhone app opens on the iPhone Duo. The difference is that only apps updated by their developer fill the 7.6-inch inner display; the rest show in an iPhone-sized window with black bars.

Which apps are adapted for the iPhone Duo?

On 22 October Apple published a list of more than 50 adapted apps, including Things, Fantastical, Bear, Craft, Slack, Netflix, Instagram, Prime Video and Flighty. Apple's own apps are adapted too. Word and Outlook will arrive in the coming weeks.

Is Duolingo adapted for the iPhone Duo?

Not yet. According to FitsDuo, the 28 October version opens in an iPhone-sized window with black bars. It works fine, and on the outer display it is used as on any iPhone.

Does Notion work on the iPhone Duo?

Yes, like any iPhone app, but as of 30 October it is not on Apple's list of adapted apps. Craft and Bear are note and document alternatives that already use the inner display.

Which spending app works well on the iPhone Duo?

Neto is adapted for the iPhone Duo since version 2.4.24: open in landscape, it shows a side rail and a two-column home screen, with your transactions on one side and today's spending, your accounts and spending by category on the other. It is free to start and does not need your bank login.

How do I know if an app is adapted for the iPhone Duo?

Open it with the Duo unfolded: if you see black bars on the sides, it is not adapted yet. Keep automatic updates on, because developers are releasing new versions every week.
