World leaders' salaries 2026: how much presidents earn

Among the leaders with an official salary figure for 2026, the Prime Minister of Australia is the best paid, at about US$434,000 a year, ahead of the US President (US$400,000) and the Prime Minister of Canada (about US$305,000). But dollars only tell half the story. Measured against the minimum wage of their own country, the presidents of Brazil and the United States are the furthest from the lowest paid workers, at roughly 27 to 29 times.

Where each figure comes from

  • Australia: Remuneration Tribunal, 2026 determination for parliamentarians (base salary A$239,270) plus the Prime Minister's additional salary of 160% of the base.
  • United States: 3 U.S.C. §102 sets US$400,000 a year, plus a US$50,000 expense allowance. Former presidents get a pension equal to a Cabinet secretary's pay, US$253,100 in 2026.
  • Canada: House of Commons, from 1 April 2026: C$217,700 as an MP plus C$217,700 as Prime Minister. Federal minimum wage C$18.15 an hour from April 2026.
  • Ireland: Houses of the Oireachtas, from 1 June 2026: €119,467 as a TD plus €136,844 as Taoiseach. Some office holders waive part of their pay. More in our Ireland minimum wage guide.
  • United Kingdom: gov.uk, September 2026: £75,440 claimed as Prime Minister (entitled to £83,837) plus the £98,599 MP salary. Details in UK Prime Minister salary.
  • France: the President's January 2024 payslip, €16,039.71 gross a month, published after a transparency request. There is no published 2026 payslip; civil service pay scales have been frozen since July 2023, so the figure is likely unchanged.
  • Mexico: Federal Expenditure Budget 2026, annual total including the year-end bonus and benefits. The monthly net salary is MX$134,290, frozen since 2025.
  • Italy: Giorgia Meloni has declared that she receives no pay as Prime Minister, because the law does not allow it to be combined with her pay as a member of parliament (€10,435 gross a month, plus allowances).
  • Brazil: Legislative Decree 172/2022: R$46,366.19 a month, 13 payments a year. Minimum wage R$1,621 in 2026.
  • Spain: Transparency Portal, amount paid in 2025. Details in Spanish in cuánto cobra el presidente del Gobierno.

We have left out leaders whose 2026 pay we could not confirm in an official source, such as Germany's Chancellor.

Why the minimum wage ranking looks so different

Converting to dollars mostly measures exchange rates and the size of each economy. Dividing by the local minimum wage measures something more interesting: how far the leader's pay is from the lowest paid full-time worker in the same country, with the same cost of living.

  • The US looks extreme because its federal minimum wage has been US$7.25 an hour since 2009, about US$15,080 a year full time. Most states set a higher one; see our US minimum wage by state.
  • Spain and the UK have the smallest gaps of the list, at around 6 to 7 times.
  • Brazil and Mexico combine relatively high presidential pay with low minimum wages.

In Latin America the gap is even wider in some countries; we cover it in Spanish in cuánto ganan los presidentes de Latinoamérica.

What a salary does not tell you

No leader on this list became wealthy from the salary alone, and a high salary is not the same as high net worth. What builds it is what you keep and what you do with it.
